United Strings Of Europe

Description:

The second release from the promising London-based string orchestra, United Strings of Europe, is *Renewal*! SACD hybrid disc. The London-based ensemble “United Strings of Europe” (USE) released its debut album, *In Motion* (BISSA-2529), in 2020. They showcased their artistry—praised for “original programming and ‘expressive performances driven by technical mastery’” (The Times)—through this recording. Their second album, *Renewal*, centers on the themes of “loss and transformation,” featuring a program arranged and curated by leader Julian Azcool to suit the ensemble’s style. An arrangement for string orchestra of *In the Winter House*, a composition by Joanna Marsh commissioned by the *Tenebre* Choir, set to a poem by Jane Draycott that “evokes imagery of darkness, light, and renewal within a fairy-tale landscape.” Caroline Shaw’s *Interlude*, a work for string quartet in which she “revitalized” the classical forms of the minuet and trio for the modern era with “equal parts originality and joy,” has been arranged by the composer herself for string orchestra. Osvaldo Gorihov’s *Three Songs* is a work for soprano and string orchestra. “The Night of the Horse That Runs Through the Sky,” which begins with “Close Your Eyes”—a Yiddish lullaby by Barry Davis—written for the film *The Man Who Cried* (Japanese title: *Your Voice That Lingers in My Ears*) directed by Sally Potter, for which he composed the music. “The Faded Moon,” based on a Galician poem by Rosalía de Castro. “How Slowly the Wind Blows,” set to a poem by Emily Dickinson. Mendelssohn’s “String Quartet No. 6 in F Minor,” said to have been composed in the wake of his sister Fanny’s sudden death. *The Swallow Builds Its Nest*, composed by Caroline Shaw based on the text of “Psalm 84,” inspired by the plight of Syrian refugees and those flooding the U.S.-Mexico border. The same production and recording team as *InMotion* was responsible for this album. King International
