Martinu / Rautavaara / Lahti Symphony Orchestra
Description:
Master musician Mustonen recorded Rautavaara and Martineau's Piano Concerto No. 3! Finland's Rautavaara and Czech-born Martineau. Seemingly having little in common, they are linked by their constant search to find new sources of inspiration and their commitment to freeing themselves from musical "puritanism. Finnish pianist Olli Mustonen performs both composers' "Piano Concerto No. 3" with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra under the baton of newly appointed principal conductor Daria Stasevska. Rautavaara's "Piano Concerto No. 3" was written in 1998, after his international success with the 1994 symphony "Angel of Light. Unlike "No. 1" (1969), which pushed the neo-romantic style further, or "No. 2" (1989), which synthesized a variety of elements, "No. 3" is written in the style of a symphonic poem with piano obbligato, in which the soloist can conduct the orchestra while playing the piano. The work is in three movements: "Tranquillo," "Adagio assai," and "Energico. It is subtitled "The Gift of Dreams" because it uses as its motif a sound pattern from the words "le dons des reves" (the gift of dreams), which first appeared in Baudelaire's poem "Death of the Poor", one of the "Four Serenades" of 1978, written for male chorus. The eclectic and prolific Martineau's "Piano Concerto No. 3" is a work with characteristics common to concertos of the Romantic period. The first movement, "Allegro," is modeled on a symphonic structure reminiscent of Brahms, with the "lingering" sounds of Stravinsky's neoclassicism. The colorful second movement, "Andante poco moderato. The third movement, "Moderato - Allegro," reflects the year 1948, a time of political upheaval in Czechoslovakia and the establishment of the Communist government, The Dallas Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Walter Hendl, gave the premiere in Dallas, Texas.
