Celebrating the 250th Anniversary of His Birth! Blautiham performs piano concertos by Wilms, a contemporary of Beethoven! SACD hybrid disc. Johann Wilhelm Wilms (1772–1847), a composer who lived during the same era as Beethoven, marks the 250th anniversary of his birth and the 175th anniversary of his death in 2022! Born in a small village in the Bergisches Land region on the right bank of the Middle Rhine, Wilmers received his first lessons in piano and composition from his father and older brother and taught himself to play the flute. At the age of 19, he moved to Amsterdam, where he made a name for himself as a flutist, pianist, organist, and impresario. He later married the daughter of a wealthy art collector in Amsterdam, a union that brought him great benefits. At the time, his works were frequently performed not only in Amsterdam but also in cities such as Leipzig. While Wilms is known for composing the Dutch national anthem, he left behind a body of work characterized by its peaceful and soothing quality, consisting primarily of symphonies, chamber music, and concertos. To commemorate the 250th anniversary of his birth, the Cologne Academy, led by Ronald Brautigam and Michael Alexander Willens, has recorded the five surviving piano concertos by Wilms, known as the “Dutch Beethoven.” This album is the second in the series and features two of those works. In these performances, Brautigam has reconstructed the works from the extant scores with guidance from Willens, allowing you to fully savor the light and graceful melodies.
