Vänskä & Minnesota Orchestra's Mahler symphony recording is finally complete! Third Symphony with Jennifer Johnston as soloist on SACD hybrid disc. Osmo Vänskä and the Minnesota Orchestra's recording of the complete Mahler symphonies (Nos. 1-10) is finally complete. Vänskä was appointed music director of the Minnesota Orchestra in 2003, and has built a reputation for his recordings of Beethoven's complete symphonies (BIS SA-1825). However, the orchestra's deteriorating management and labor-management conflict intensified, and in October 2012, the management decided to lock out the orchestra. The entire 2012/2013 season was cancelled, and the very survival of the company was in jeopardy. In January 2014, after a labor-management agreement was reached, Vänskä returned to the position of chief conductor. Since then, the Minnesota Orchestra's performances have become even denser and more cohesive, and the performance and recording of the complete Mahler symphonies was a major project for the prestige of the orchestra. The Symphony No. 3 is a large-scale and extraordinary masterpiece, with gorgeous Wagner-like woodwind and brass, numerous percussion instruments, solo alto voice, female chorus, and boys' chorus.The piece is in two parts, six movements, and runs for more than 100 minutes. The deeply absorbing music of the last movement is one of the most beautiful melodies ever written, and this session, which took place after the November 2022 concert, is a moving performance that is a fitting culmination to the recording of the complete work, which began in 2016.
