Description:
Eldbjerg Hemsin, Norway's promising star, recorded Shostakovich and Borgström's Violin Concertos on SACD hybrid disc. Eldbjörg Hemsing, one of Norway's most promising stars, has recorded the Borgström and Shostakovich Violin Concertos. Hemsin made his debut at the age of 11 with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. He studied under Boris Kushnir, who is known for having trained Julian Rachlin and Nikolai Snyder, and his talent blossomed. With her elegant tone and large scale performance, Hemsin is one of the most promising violinists in the world today. Jarmal Borgström was born in Kristiany (now Oslo). Strongly impressed by the music of Johann Selmer, Borgström studied with Svendsen, L.M. Lindemann, Ole Olsen, and others before going on to Leipzig and Berlin. After returning to Japan in 1903, he worked as a composer, educator, and critic, becoming one of the cultural leaders of early twentieth-century Christiania. Borgström's works were forgotten for more than 50 years after World War II. It was not until the turn of the new century that they began to be performed again. The Violin Concerto here is a beautiful work, full of lightheartedness and liveliness. Dedicated to David Oistrakh, Shostakovich's Violin Concerto No. 1 was composed between 1947 and 1948, but was withheld from the public in February 1948 after the Communist Party criticized the composer for his avant-garde writing style, which included the use of 12-tone technique. It was not published until 1955, when the criticism of Zhidanov was thought to have abated. The four-movement work consists of a somber meditation, a crisp and witty scherzo, an unprecedentedly grand passacaglia, and a burlesque with a percussion flourish. Hemsin's performance is emotionally rich and dynamic. King International
