The fourth installment in Noriko Ogawa’s complete recording of Satie’s solo piano works features ballet music! Performed on an 1890 Erard piano to capture the sound of the era SACD hybrid disc. Noriko Ogawa is a world-renowned pianist and a flagship artist of the BIS label. She has received high acclaim for her complete recording of Satie’s piano solo works, a project launched in 2015 to commemorate the 90th anniversary of Satie’s death. This fourth volume in the series is “Lulach—Cinéma.” Satie was active in France from the late 19th to the early 20th century. Although he studied at the Paris Conservatory as a teenager, he never quite fit in and instead pursued composition in Montmartre, where artists with free-spirited ideas gathered. In 1905, he studied under D'Indy at the Schola Cantorum to re-learn composition. As his reputation as a composer grew, he attracted the attention of renowned artists such as Jean Cocteau and Picasso, with whom he developed close friendships. Eventually, he created his own unique world, pursuing not only the satirical nature of his programmatic works but also the unrestrained expression of a pure musical sensibility unbound by any constraints. This album features “Mercure (Hermes),” based on the Greek god Hermes, and “Le Rêveur (Today’s Performance Canceled),” which features firefighters, a hearse, and other characters. Noriko Ogawa delivers a magnificent performance of Satie’s ballet music! Recorded in August 2018, this session took place in the studio at Tokyo College of Music, where she currently serves as a special professor. The instrument used was an 1890 Érard piano—an instrument from the very era when Satie composed many of his piano pieces in rapid succession.
