Led by Masaaki Suzuki, the Bach Collegium Japan has finally recorded Beethoven’s *Missa Solemnis*! While the BCJ’s previous Beethoven recording—Wagner’s arrangement of the Ninth Symphony (piano version), recorded in 1998—is well-known, the ensemble has now, after much anticipation, taken on Beethoven’s greatest masterpiece. The *Missa Solemnis*, widely regarded as the greatest Mass composition of all time, is a work that Beethoven himself frequently described in his letters as “my greatest work,” which indicates not only that it features a large-scale ensemble and requires a long performance time, but also that Beethoven held a strong conviction regarding the work’s high artistic value. Masaaki Suzuki & BCJ’s *Missa Solemnis* is an expressive and brilliant performance.
