Seeking the most personal means of expression: orchestral works by the Swedish composer Albert Schnelzer Hybrid SACD. Albert Schnelzer (b. 1972) is one of the most talked-about composers of his generation in Sweden. His international breakthrough came with the Paris premiere of Predatory Dances, commissioned by Radio France in 2004. For him, composing is "not a matter of devoting oneself to what is deemed appropriate for contemporary music, but of searching for one's own most personal expression". He studied composition at the Malmö Academy of Music and composition and conducting at the Royal College of Music in London. A Freak in Burbank, his "homage" to the film-maker Tim Burton, was performed at the BBC Proms in 2010 and has become one of the most frequently played of all contemporary Swedish works. The cello concerto Crazy Diamond, commissioned by the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, is in four movements: "You Were Shining Like the Sun", "When It Pours, There's Thunder in Your Ear", "Rearrange Me till I'm Sane" and "Would You Exchange Your Heroes for Ghosts?". Tales from Suburbia grew out of the composer's personal feelings about the suburbs. Brain Damage is a concerto for orchestra in three movements: "When Your Head Explodes", "Crumpled Face" and "The Dam Breaks". The movement titles are drawn from the lyrics, by Roger Waters, of the Pink Floyd song of the same name on The Dark Side of the Moon. The conductor Benjamin Shwartz (b. 1979) was born in Los Angeles, studied with Otto-Werner Mueller at the Curtis Institute of Music and was Music Director of the Wrocław Philharmonic from 2013 to 2016.
