Emma Kirkby also joins us! The superb Dowland!SACD hybrid release by the Cherith Consort of Viols. Cherith, the group's name for an ancient Greek stringed instrument, is a British viol consort. Their 2015 release of Ayres & Graces (BIS SA 2153), a performance of Christopher Simpson's Airs and Divisions, received critical acclaim, with The Guardian describing it as "wonderfully supple, propulsive and lively." The second album, entitled A Pleasing Melancholy, features seven pieces from John Dowland's Lacryme, or Seven Tears, a consort of "seven passionate pavanes in the form of tears" (Pavane de la Lacryme), and other instrumental pieces, The program will also include songs by Dowland and his contemporaries, including Emma Kirkby's "Lachrymé or Seven Tears" (Tearful Pavane).To change the mood of sadness that covers the album, three pieces from "Lacryme," "Mr. George Whitehead's Armand," and "Paduan" and "Volta" from Thomas Simpson's "Tafel Consort" (Hamburg, published in 1621), which are "'major' in the current sense of the key" are They are interspersed with three works that are "'major' in today's sense of the key".
