Three orchestral works with soloists by the brilliant French composer Pascal Dusapin. SACD hybrid disc. This recording features three orchestral works with soloists by Pascal Dusapin (1955–), one of France’s leading composers, performed by the Orchestre National de la Loire under the baton of Pascal Roffé. Dussapin is a unique composer who studied fine arts, science, art, and aesthetics at the Sorbonne; he was profoundly influenced by Xenakis, whose lectures he attended from 1974 to 1978. *Listening to the Wind* premiered on August 21, 2014, as part of the Suntory Hall International Commissioning Series. The work is based on three scenes from the opera *Penthesilea* by Heinrich von Kleist and was written for mezzo-soprano and orchestra. He began work on the violin concerto *Ascension* in 2008 at the suggestion of Marek Janowski; it was subsequently decided that Renaud Capuçon would premiere the piece, and it was completed in 2011. The interplay between the violin and orchestra is exquisitely captivating. Composed in 2002, the piano concerto *Because* is one of Dupassant’s masterpieces, featuring a tense dialogue between the piano and the orchestra.
