F.P. Zimmermann records two Shostakovich concertos! Frank Peter Zimmermann recorded Shostakovich's two concertos for the first time. Zimmermann is one of the world's finest violinists, with a repertoire ranging from baroque to contemporary music, and his performances of both have been widely acclaimed. This recording is a live performance of the first concerto in December 2012 and the second concerto in October 2015, both with the Elbphilharmonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks (former North German Radio Symphony Orchestra) under the baton of Alan Gilbert. The two violin concertos were dedicated to David Oistrakh. The first was composed between 1947 and 1948, but its avant-garde writing style, including the use of the twelve-tone technique, led to criticism of the composer by the Communist Party in February 1948, so it was not released. It was not published until 1955, when Zidanov's criticism was thought to have abated.The four-movement work consists of a somber meditation, a sharp and witty scherzo, an unprecedentedly grand passacaglia, and a burlesque in which the percussion group plays a major role. The long cadenza between the third and fourth movements is based on Zimmermann's own score. It is interesting to note the difference between this version and the Oistrakh version that is usually performed. Composed between 1966 and 1967, No. 2 is a work with a more contemplative and philosophical content, which is typical of Shostakovich's style at that time. It is characterized by its clear chamber-like contours and very few full ensemble sections. The solo violin part rarely rests in unison, and each movement is characterized by a cadenza in the middle section. Zimmermann sings Shostakovich beautifully with his excellent technique and overwhelmingly attractive beautiful sound. It is also noteworthy that different Stradivarius instruments are used in each of the two concertos. In the first concerto, a "LadyInchiquin" made in 1711, which once belonged to Kreisler, is used, and in the second concerto, an "exRodewalt" made in 1713 is used.Both allow you to listen to the tones of masterpieces that will make you swoon unintentionally.
