The SACD hybrid disc of mixed choral works by 13 contemporary women composers, including works by the genius Leila Auerbach! The disc, entitled "Contemporary Women," is a collection of mixed choral works by 13 contemporary women composers sung by the Uppsala University Choir in Sweden. The Uppsala University Choir established the Uppsala University Choir & Anders Wahl Composition Prize in 2013 to celebrate its 50th anniversary as a mixed chorus. The prize is open only to female composers and aims to support the creative work of women who do not have the same opportunities as male composers and to contribute to the development of choral music today: in 2014, the prize was awarded to Maria Löwberg (1968-) for her "Writing in the Sand" and in 2016 to Anna= Karin Klockar's (1960-) "Speech" won the same prize in 2016. Both are Swedish composers.In addition to the two award-winning works, the disc includes a lullaby by Russian composer Lehra Auerbach, a work by Karin Rehnqvist, who became internationally recognized for her 1983 vocal piece "Davids nimm," a reflection on the meaning of life by church musician Löwberg, a work on the poem "Letters Written in Sand" by Christina Gracell, and three memorable "speeches" by Dalarna-born Crockal on Native American Chief Josephs. Löwberg's "Songs of Youth and Pleasure," a work based on Christina Gracell's poem "Written in Sand," Dalarna-born Crockall's text of three memorable "speeches" by Native American Chief Joseph and others, and Larsen's "Songs of Youth and Pleasure" in madrigal form based on texts from Renaissance poetry. The collection includes works in a variety of texts and compositional styles, such as "Songs of Youth and Pleasure," which Larsen composed in madrigal form from Renaissance poetry. Uppsala, the former capital of Sweden, is home to Sweden's oldest university, Uppsala University, about an hour from Stockholm, and is still a thriving research city today. The Uppsala University Choir, named "Songs for All," was founded in 1830 as a male voice choir.The choir then changed to a mixed choir in 1963, and Cecilia Rüdinger Aline was artistic director from 1988 to 2009, when she became artistic director of Orfei Drengal, also in Uppsala, and then Mariya Gundolina, born in Novorossokolniki, Russia, from 2010. has been conducting the orchestra as artistic director.
