Description:

SACD hybrid disc of two concertos for brass instruments by Finnish composer Kalevi Aho. Finnish composer Kalevi Aho's series. Following "Concerto for Timpani and Orchestra" and "Concerto No. 1 for Piano and Orchestra" (BISSA2306), this new release features two concertos for brass instruments. The "Trombone Concerto" was commissioned by Jorgen van Rijn to Kalevi Aho with funds from the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Prize he received in 2006, and premiered on March 2, 2012 with the Hague Residenti Orchestra under the direction of Finnish conductor Santu Matthias Rouvali. The piece was premiered on March 2, 2012. This is the second time Aho has composed a concerto work for trombone, following Symphony No. 9 in the style of a "concerto symphony" (BIS 706). The work is in four movements. The first movement is lyrical, incorporating chorale-like passages that resonate with the trombone's "song" and the soloist's actual "song," and the second movement is "presto," dominated by the complex rhythms of the djembe and two congas. The third movement, "Adagio," is followed by an interlude, "Vivace," in which the djembe and congas play a more complex rhythm, and the fourth movement, "Tranquillo. The composition consists of two movements played one by one without a pause (attacca). The "Concerto for Trumpet and Symphonic Wind Orchestra" began as a project with the London Brass Virtuosi, but the project was withdrawn, so the Finnish Symphonic Wind Orchestra "Sisu" and the Helsinki "Guard Band ( The Royal Flemish Philharmonic Orchestra (now the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra) also participated in the composition of this work. The orchestra consists of the wind section of a medium-sized symphony orchestra, plus alto and tenor saxophones, baritone horn, and three percussionists. The solo trumpet requires a high level of skill and taste, including special techniques. The first movement of "Mysterioso. The second movement of "Vivace" with jazz elements. From the third movement "Interlude and Cadenza" to the fourth movement "Capriccio" (capriccio) (whimsically) in Atacca. In the final act, the solo trumpet echoes the aftermath of the first movement. Beautifully colored music that makes the most of the wind orchestra's textures and harmonics. Alain de Rudet on trumpet, Antwerp Symphony Orchestra and Martin Brabbins conducting, recorded by members of the premiere on March 31, 2012. (1/2) King International
