Two woodwind quintets by leading Finnish composer Kalevi Aho! SACD hybrid disc. Kalevi Aho was born in 1949 in Forssa, Southern Finland. He studied violin at the Sibelius Academy and composition classes in Rautavaara, and after graduation he studied with Boris Blacher at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Berlin.By 2017 he has composed five operas, 17 symphonies, 28 concertos, and three chamber symphonies. He is one of the leading contemporary Finnish composers. His Woodwind Quintet No. 1 was commissioned by the Turku Philharmonic. The quintet's works include "Agitato - Cantando" (intense with strong emotion - as if singing), "Vivace, leggiero - Allegro marcato" (lively, light - fast, each note clear), "Marziale, pesante - Furioso" (march-like, heavy - furious), "Andante con con uno" (Andante con uno), and "Vivace, leggiero - Allegro marcato" (lively, light - fast, each note clear). In part of the last movement, the players take turns playing off-stage, creating a sense of space and a distant "pianissimo" effect.No. 2 was commissioned by the Berlin Philharmonic Woodwind Quintet. In contrast to No. 1, which "breathes in fast, short phrases," this piece has the feel of a "symphony of five wind players," with the music progressing along several long lines. The music moves along several long lines: "Ruhig beginnend - Bewegte (Begin quietly)," "Schnell, wild (Fast, wild)," "Ruhig fliBend (Flowing, calm)," and "Lebhaft (Lively). The Berlin Philharmonic Woodwind Quintet was founded in 1988 as part of the orchestra's internal chamber music activities. The quintet has recorded several albums for the BIS label, including Danzi's Woodwind Quintet and Piano and Woodwind Quintet (BIS 1581). King International, Inc.
