Dan Laurin, the prodigy of the recorder world, takes on a virtuosic work by contemporary composer Kiel Mayering! Completed in 2013, the Concerto for Eagle Recorder and Strings is a challenging piece that seems to push the limits of the recorder, with virtuosic passages scattered throughout. The Eagle Recorder, developed in 2008, features the standard recorder’s range along with keys identical to those of a saxophone. This allows it to produce not only the warm tone of a recorder but also a clear, piercing sound that can hold its own against the volume of a string section. True to the title of Track 8, “Rock That Flute,” this piece is a high-energy, full-throttle assault, with endlessly repeating passages appearing throughout. The interplay with the strings is thrilling, and once you hear it, you’ll be captivated by its mysterious charm. True to Mäyring’s style, the piece features a succession of intricate passages, and the incorporation of effective vocal elements lends the sound a remarkably fresh quality. This innovative concerto is certainly a standout release from an audio perspective as well. The performing ensemble, 1B1, is a modern instrument ensemble based at Bjergsted 1 (Bjergsted 1), a modern-instrument ensemble based in Bjergsted 1. This notable ensemble was founded when Stavanger was selected as the “European Capital of Culture” in 2008, bringing together musicians teaching at the University of Stavanger and members of the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra.
