Jonathan Prowlight, a British virtuoso hailed as “a pianist who combines tenderness and power.” While he has been actively recording rare arrangements for British labels in recent years, he has also released a collection of Brahms’s solo piano works on the BIS label. It may seem somewhat unexpected to associate Prowlight with Brahms, but given that he released a Brahms album in his early 30s and regularly includes the composer’s works in his recitals, it is clear that Brahms is a significant part of his repertoire. This second album in the series features Piano Sonata No. 2, Variations on an Original Theme, Three Interludes, and a Scherzo. Born in 1959, Prowlight is a master who carries on a unique, understated, and deeply nuanced artistic style that is becoming increasingly rare today; now in his mid-50s, he delivers his most fulfilling performances yet. In particular, in Brahms’s late masterpiece, the Three Intermezzi, Op. 117, you can fully savor Prowlight’s understated and nuanced artistry.
