The Sirena Recorder Quartet’s long-awaited new recording spans works ranging from an anonymous 14th-century piece to Baroque works by Bach and Vivaldi, and on to contemporary compositions, fully showcasing the potential of the recorder ensemble. The opening track, Vivaldi’s Concerto Grosso in D minor, Op. 3, No. 11, RV. 565, is famous for having been arranged by J.S. Bach into his Organ Concerto in D minor, BWV 596; this performance sounds as if one were listening to a positive organ, showcasing the quartet’s superb ensemble playing. Bach’s Chorale Prelude is similarly superbly arranged. Furthermore, in the “Sanctus” by the contemporary composer Maierling, the musicians interweave expressive vocal elements with intricate tonguing, creating a truly stimulating sound.
