SACD hybrid disc.The string trio Trio Boccherini, formed in 2014, has recorded works by four composers who contributed to the development of the Hungarian National Music School in the early 20th century. The String Trio by Leo Weinel (1885-1960), known as the Hungarian Mendelssohn, and the Serenade by Ernst von Dohnányi (1877-1960) are both elegant and reminiscent of Brahms, yet beautifully expressive of their own national colors. Kodaly's Interlude is an early work that is the result of the composer's ethnomusicological studies. László Weinel (1916-1944), an alumnus of János Starker at the Liszt School of Music, was a promising Hungarian musician of the early 20th century, who decided to become a composer after seeing Kodály's "Harri János. However, just as he was showing great promise, anti-Semitic laws restricted his public activities. Later, he was sent to forced labor and died in a concentration camp in Luckau at the tragic age of only 28. Serenade, composed while studying composition with Kodaly, reveals the exceptional talent of László Weinel.
