The latest album from the historic Swedish male choir, Orfei Drängar, recorded at Beringe Church—a building dating back to the Middle Ages that still retains its historic charm—is now available! ★SACD hybrid disc. Uppsala, a city in Sweden home to the oldest university in Scandinavia. The male choir Orfei Drengar (OD) was founded here in 1853, and 160 years have passed since then. Following in the footsteps of composer Alveen, choir conductors Erik Eriksson and Robert Sund, Cecilia Rüdinger-Alin (b. 1961) has served as artistic director since 2008. The “Vocal Symphony”—a group of approximately 80 singers ranging in age from 20 to 55—continues its activities as the “Servants of Orpheus,” striving to achieve even greater depth. ★At Orpheus Drengal’s concerts, the program features not only entertaining performances—such as “Caprice”—but also sacred works. *From the Depths* is an album produced in the style of a “one-night concert,” featuring 16 selections from their repertoire of sacred music. The program begins with an Estonian hymn arranged by organist Edenstham, followed by beautiful and dynamic works by Estonian composers such as Kreek, Aesper, and Lemba. Two pieces are taken from the Latin Mass by the Swedish composer Söderman, who was active during the late Romantic period. Sven-David Sandström, who enjoys international popularity and is considered Sweden’s most prolific composer, has in recent years released a series of sacred works modeled on the tradition of Bach.
