The second installment in the Nielsen symphony collection featuring Sweden’s premier orchestra, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, and Sakari Oramo—who has served as its principal conductor since 2008—features Symphony No. 1 and Symphony No. 3, “The Broad-Minded Symphony.” In recent years, Oramo has been making ever greater strides, brimming with confidence and pride as the orchestra’s principal conductor, and this series of Nielsen’s complete symphonies has exceeded expectations, featuring passionate performances that pursue a beautiful sound. Symphony No. 1 was composed between 1890 and 1892, and its style reveals the influence of Brahms and Svendsen. It was premiered in March 1894 by the Copenhagen Court Theater Orchestra, conducted by Johan Svendsen. This work conveys the vigor of the young Nielsen. Meanwhile, Symphony No. 3 in D minor, “The Grand Symphony,” was composed between 1910 and 1911. The second movement features vocalises for soprano and baritone, and the final movement, with its rich sound, is a majestic work reminiscent of the finale of Brahms’ Symphony No. 1.
