Liturgical music of the Russian Orthodox Church. Rachmaninoff’s masterpiece, *Vespers* SACD hybrid disc. Following their previous release, a collection of choral works by MacMillan (BISSA1719), the Netherlands Radio Choir’s latest album features Rachmaninoff’s “Vespers” and “The Mother of God.” The “Vespers,” Op. 37, a four-part unaccompanied work, was composed in memory of S.V. Smolensky, an authority on Russian Orthodox music who passed away in 1909. S.V. Smolensky, who died in 1909. It was premiered in Moscow in 1915 by the Synodal Choir under the direction of Nikolai Danilin. The work is a grand composition consisting of 15 pieces in total, selected from the Vespers (6 pieces), Matins (8 pieces), and the First Hour (1 piece). On the other hand, “Theotokos” was composed in 1893. “Theotokos” is a Christian term and a title given to the Virgin Mary. While Rachmaninoff is famous for his piano concertos and symphonies, it is in vocal works such as these that one can truly savor his rich melodies.
