The complete cantata cycle reaches its conclusion Bach Collegium Japan's Bach cantata series, Volume 55: the fourth instalment of Leipzig cantatas from the 1730s and 40s, including BWV 191, Bach's only Latin cantata SACD hybrid. Volume 55, the final release in Bach Collegium Japan's complete recording of Bach's cantatas, is finally here. Looking back on the recordings made alongside the complete performance cycle of the sacred cantatas begun in 1995, Masaaki Suzuki remarks: "These seventeen years have been a turbulent, nail-biting journey." The fruit of long labour - of discussion and sometimes battle with Robert von Bahr, head of the BIS label - this is a landmark disc, and the completion of a cycle in which the whole world can take pride is well worth celebrating. Cantata No. 69, "Lobe den Herrn, meine Seele" BWV 69, is thought to have been first performed in August 1748 and is a reworking, for the inauguration of the Leipzig town council, of the identically titled BWV 69a of 1723. The two recitatives relating to the Gospel text of the earlier version were removed and replaced by a new recitative referring to civic government, while the closing chorale was changed from a text by Rodigast to one by Luther that speaks of "the works of men" and "the prosperity of the land". A brilliant seven-part setting with timpani heightens the festive mood. Cantata No. 30, "Freue dich, erlöste Schar" BWV 30, is a parody of the secular cantata "Angenehmes Wiederau" BWV 30a of autumn 1737, written for the Feast of St John the Baptist, with a text probably by Picander. In twelve movements, it closes with a radiantly joyful chorus. The final work recorded is Bach's only Latin cantata, No. 191, "Gloria in excelsis Deo" BWV 191. Its layout is unusual, following the opening "Gloria" with the lesser doxology in praise of the Trinity, and it comprises just three movements: chorus - duet (soprano and tenor) - chorus. The third movement in particular sets two fugal expositions between blazing homophonic passages, and its exultant close has a dignity entirely fitting as the conclusion of the cantata cycle.
