The passionate violin playing of the beautiful violinist Elina Vahala! The program features “Leika” and the Violin Concerto composed by Jaakko Kousist (1974–), who also conducted, with Corigliano’s “Red Violin” as the B-side! ★Jakko Kousist’s *Leika*, Op. 24 (2010), was originally written for a quartet (piano, violin, cello, and clarinet) in 1998. This orchestral arrangement—the subject of this recording—is a captivating work that shifts dramatically from its flamboyant opening, continuing with virtuosic clarinet passages and a dreamlike harp melody before culminating in a grand climax. Likewise, Kousist’s Violin Concerto, Op. 28, is a long-awaited work he had been nurturing since 2000; as a renowned violinist himself, he harbored a deep passion for the violin concerto form. This work was reportedly composed under the inspiration of Kalevi Aho’s Symphony No. 3. The opening is a surprise. The piece begins with a violin solo for about three and a half minutes, after which a large-scale orchestra enters. Highly virtuosic passages appear throughout both the violin solo and the orchestral parts, making this a grand work with a symphonic structure. The B-side is “The Red Violin”! This is a work by the American contemporary composer John Corigliano (1938–), a violin concerto that references “The Red Violin”! It is a masterpiece that conveys the passion of that violin, which bore a bizarre fate. The piece is peppered throughout with virtuosic passages that fully exploit the violin’s potential.
