No. 20, featuring a cadenza by Brautigam, and No. 27, with its beautiful, delicate nuances! SACD hybrid disc. Brautigam’s latest Mozart recording is now available. In May 2013, he traveled to Japan with the Cologne Academy, led by Michael Alexander Villenz, to perform Mozart’s piano concertos, delivering passionate performances with a high degree of ensemble cohesion at every concert. Their overall lively and crisp performance reveals a new side of Mozart’s piano concertos. This release features the masterpieces No. 20 in D minor, K. 466, and No. 27 in B-flat major, K. 595. No. 20 is set at a generally brisk tempo that completely revitalizes the piece’s image. Without disrupting the unique atmosphere inherent in Mozart’s minor-key works, the performance provides a sense of comfort to the listener through exquisite variations in the orchestra’s dynamics and the fortepiano’s touch. Furthermore, Brautigam’s cadenza—true to his artistic vision—is a brilliant and luminous performance, showcasing a magnificent cadenza that only he can express. Meanwhile, No. 27 unfolds with Brautigam’s enchantingly beautiful touch and the Cologne Academy’s delicate, nuanced, and exquisite playing. This recording uses Mozart’s cadenza. The instrument is a replica of an Anton Walter (1752–1826) fortepiano, crafted by Paul McNulty in 2011. Regarding his use of instruments crafted by McNulty for both performance and recording, Brautigam states, “McNulty not only studies old instruments and recreates them anew, but playing his replicas also provides me with fresh inspiration in terms of musical interpretation.” It is clear that by using the instrument that best matches Brautigam’s vision, he is able to create a very natural atmosphere.
