The Full Charm of the Swedish Folk Instrument, the Nyckelharpa SACD hybrid disc. The nyckelharpa is a Swedish folk instrument. Although it was used throughout Scandinavia in the Middle Ages, the tradition has been passed down exclusively in the Uppland region of Sweden to the present day. It is a violin-shaped bowed instrument with four strings and twelve resonating strings, characterized by a keyboard-like mechanism that replaces frets. Its charm lies in its richly folk-inspired and rustic tone. Emilia Ampel, the young virtuoso and 2010 World Champion on this instrument, makes her BIS debut. Johan Hedin, the preeminent master of the nyckelharpa today, also participates. In addition to folk-inspired pieces reminiscent of Alveén’s music, the album features a diverse range of styles—including medieval early music and rock-inspired compositions written by Ampel herself—making it highly recommended for world music fans.
