Description:
A truly beautiful melody! The second volume of string quartets by Swedish composer Stenhammar—featuring the world premiere recording—is already here. SACD hybrid disc. The second volume of string quartets, a masterpiece by Sweden’s leading composer Wilhelm Stenhammar, is now available! Following the first collection [String Quartets Nos. 3 and 4, and “Elegy” and “Interlude” from the suite *The Songs of Rodressi*], this album is performed by the Stenhammar String Quartet. Although Stenhammar composed works in various musical genres—including operas, symphonies, concertos, and vocal music—the string quartets included here represent the finest body of work for understanding his artistry. The String Quartet in E-flat minor—a world premiere recording—was composed in 1897 and is a contemporary of Stenhammar’s landmark Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat major, Op. 1 (1893), as well as the String Quartet No. 1 (1894), which bears an opus number, No. 2 (1896). While these works convey the vigor and passion of his youth, they are so well-developed in both structure and content that one could say he had already established his own distinct style. The fact that the Stenhammar String Quartet has now made these world premiere recordings is cause for great celebration, not only for Stenhammar fans but for all music lovers. Formed in 2002, the Stenhammar String Quartet—true to its name—focuses primarily on the works of Stenhammar and has earned high acclaim both in Sweden and abroad. In recent years, the quartet has also devoted significant effort to contemporary music and has received numerous commissions from composers in the United States, the United Kingdom, and elsewhere. In 2011, they recorded approximately 40 of Stenhammar’s works for Swedish Radio and continue to perform primarily in Sweden. This quartet demonstrates overwhelming technical skill and precise interpretation, and it is certainly a quartet to watch in the future. King International
