Congratulations! Masaaki Suzuki & Bach Collegium Japan Win the 45th Suntory Music Award SACD hybrid disc. Bach Collegium Japan has completed the performance and recording of Bach’s complete church cantatas. Amid the buzz surrounding their win of the 45th Suntory Music Award, their highly anticipated new album is the fourth volume in their series of Bach’s secular cantatas, recorded in July 2013 at Shirakawa Hall in Nagoya. “Break, Shatter, and Smash” (The Calmed Aeolus), BWV 205, was written to celebrate the name day of August Friedrich Müller, a philosophy lecturer at the University of Leipzig, and premiered on August 3, 1725. It is a “musical drama” performed by Pallas, the goddess of the arts; Pomona, the goddess of fruit trees; Zephyrus, the god of the west wind; Aeolus, the god of the winds; and “the winds.” Based on its instrumentation, it is believed to have been performed outdoors. “O Harmonious Rivalry of Resonating Strings” (BWV 207) was composed to celebrate the appointment of Gottlieb Corte, a Doctor of Law at the University of Leipzig, as a professor; its premiere is believed to have taken place in December 1726. Judging by the lyrics, it is said to have been commissioned by a wealthy student who admired Corte. The work is a musical drama centered on allegorical characters representing “Happiness,” “Gratitude,” “Diligence,” and “Honor.” It includes an adaptation of the third movement of the Brandenburg Concerto No. 1 in F major, and the inclusion of this brilliant concerto movement is one of the work’s key attractions.
