A box set of Beethoven’s Complete Piano Sonatas, performed by fortepiano master Ronald Brautigam, is now available! Meticulously crafted performances using replicas of period instruments SACD hybrid disc. Following the Complete Beethoven Piano Concertos by Ronald Brautigam, a master of the fortepiano, the Complete Beethoven Piano Sonatas are now available in a box set. Recordings for this series have been made every August since 2003 at the Estersöker Church in Sweden, and the complete recording of all 32 sonatas was finalized in 2008. While Brautigam is known for his lively and clear-cut approach, his interpretation of Beethoven in this series is true to the works’ historical context, capturing the spirit of the era. The instruments used are period replicas: three fortepianos crafted by Paul McNulty. Regarding his use of McNulty’s instruments for performance and recording, Brautigam states, “McNulty not only researches old instruments and recreates them anew, but playing the replicas he crafts also provides fresh inspiration for my musical interpretation.” It is clear that by using the instruments he envisions as being in the best possible condition, he creates an extremely natural atmosphere. This can truly be called the definitive recording of Beethoven’s complete piano sonatas on the fortepiano. This box set includes all 32 piano sonatas (Beethoven: Complete Solo Piano Works, Vol. 1–8) and a collection of early works (Beethoven: Complete Solo Piano Works, Vol. 9).
