Tormis, Veljo (1930-)
Description:
SACD hybrid disc of a work well-known in the Japanese choral world, performed by the renowned Swedish composer Orphey Drengal. The Estonian composer Velijo Tormis (1930-) is well known in the choral world in Japan. Many of his choral works are based on Estonian folk music, creating a unique sound world. His masterpiece "Curse on the Iron" was written in 1972, but was banned in the Soviet era due to its overflowing primitive shamanism. It is almost like world music, and is filled with a robust spiritual energy reminiscent of Akira Ifukube's vocal works. The prestigious Swedish choir Orphey Drengal is surprisingly skillful and shows the character of a definitive recording. Female conductor Cecilia Rüdinger-Alene plays the shaman's drum herself, and also assumes the role of a priestess. King International
