Seventy minutes of sheer happiness. The Mendelssohn SACD hybrid disc with fortepiano, the quintessence of Brautigam. Brautigam, who is at the top of his game, takes on Mendelssohn's Molltenlieder. He seems to be an expert at Mendelssohn, as he has recorded the concerto for the BIS label in the past. Mendelssohn's pianism is more classical than that of Liszt or Chopin, but it is based on rigorous finger training, which makes it difficult and frightening to cheat. Brautigam is perfect in this respect, weaving neat, clean music from a replica of an 1830 Pleyel fortepiano. Mendelssohn's beautiful melodies are exquisitely sung, and you can enjoy a happy time.
