This is Baroque-era world music SACD hybrid disc. Arte dei Sonatori is a Polish period instrument ensemble founded in 1993. This time, they take on Telemann. Telemann, who was reportedly more popular than Bach during his lifetime, was also a pioneer who took an interest in Polish folk music earlier than anyone else. Although his “Polish Concerto” is Baroque music, it stands out for its extensive use of Polish folk songs and dance tunes. It’s safe to say that no ensemble other than the Polish group Arte dei Suonatori is capable of recreating this exactly as Telemann intended. It is rare to hear such a lively performance of Telemann’s music, with outstanding rhythm and phrasing. Furthermore, the Suite in D Major, “Comic-Tragic,” is a hilarious piece of program music, with each movement bearing titles such as “Gout,” “Treatment,” “The Man Who Thinks He Is Sick,” “The Dandy,” and “The Brothel.” King International
