The warmth of the fortepiano's sound and Brautigam's sharp touch bring new light to these masterpieces. In addition, the virtuoso pianist brings out the full appeal of other fine but rarely performed works, such as the Last Musical Thoughts in C major (the original is the opening sketch for string quintet) and the Andante Favori in F major, WoO.57. The instrument is an 1800s replica fortepiano made by Paul McNulty in 2011.Regarding the use of McNulty-made instruments in the performance and recording, Brautigam says, "Not only does McNulty study old instruments and create new ones, but playing his replicas gives me some kind of new inspiration in terms of performance interpretation.
