Lan Shui’s Sparkling Debussy SACD hybrid disc. This new album by Lan Shui—now a leading artist on the BIS label—and the Singapore Symphony Orchestra features a collection of Debussy’s orchestral works. “La Mer,” recorded in 2004, has already been included on a previous album, but “Images,” recorded in 2009, and “Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun,” recorded in 2013, are making their debut on this album. In both pieces, Lan Shui’s bright and sparkling orchestration complements Debussy’s works beautifully, leaving a very favorable impression. As Singapore’s leading national orchestra, the ensemble appointed Lan Shui—a Chinese conductor with a proven track record in the United States—as its music director in 1997 and has since grown into an orchestra active on the world stage. The orchestra is also active in recording, and its world premiere recording of the complete symphonies of Tchelepnin received particularly high praise.
