The latest album from trumpeter Ulle Edvard Antonsen—known for his numerous outstanding recordings on the BIS label—is a collection of trumpet concertos by French composers. Antonsen is renowned for his exceptional technique and outstanding expressiveness, and thanks to the high-quality recording characteristic of the BIS label, the music performed by the trumpet and orchestra resonates throughout the entire concert hall, creating a deeply three-dimensional soundscape. ★Henri Tomasi studied at the Paris Conservatory and served as music director for Paris Radio and, from 1930 to 1935, for Radio Indochine. This trumpet concerto, composed in 1944, features the energetic sound characteristic of Tomasi. André Jolivet favored mystical themes from non-European regions, and this style is reflected in his Concertino for Trumpet, Strings, and Piano. Next is Robert Planel, a composer who served as the Chief Inspector of Music Education for the City of Paris from 1945 and is credited with founding the Paris Regional Conservatory. This trumpet concerto is one of Planel’s signature works. Finally, Alfred Desenclos is a composer best known for his saxophone quartets, but in this piece, “Prayer, Curse, and Dance,” as the title suggests, the prayer-like trumpet melody leaves a lasting impression.
