Nils Geese (Gade) (1817–1890), the “Father of Nordic Music,” was also a symphonist who composed no fewer than eight symphonies. All of these works are brimming with sweet melodies and are masterpieces with a surprisingly diverse range—from refreshing Mendelssohn-esque romanticism to regional colors that foreshadow Grieg and crystal-clear lyricism. The rich, flavorful performance by his father, Järvi, is also a highlight. Additionally, it’s worth noting that Paavo Järvi provides the accompaniment for the Violin Concerto.
