Description:
The cellist Jakob Kullberg records Saariaho and Nørgård Jakob Kullberg, the cellist of Trio Aristos heard on Nordsending (BIS-2269), returns for his second BIS release: an album of cello concertos by two composers with whom he has collaborated closely, the Dane Per Nørgård and the Finn Kaija Saariaho. Jakob Kullberg was born in Aarhus, Denmark, in 1976. After studying with Harro Ruijsenaars at the Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus, he worked with Dmitri Ferschtman, Valter Dešpalj, Mats Lidström and Colin Carr, and took his soloist diploma under Morten Zeuthen at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen. He has been a professor at the Royal College of Music in London since 2016. Nørgård's Cello Concerto No. 1, "Between", is in three movements: "In Between", in which "the expression of inner feeling" (the cello) is set against "external forces" (the orchestra); "Turning Point", where the soloist gains the upper hand; and "Among", where the two become equals. The music has also been read as an image of human growth, and in the final movement the cello plays a melody based on the slendro scale of the gamelan. The work was also recorded by Kullberg's teacher Morten Zeuthen. Remembering Child was written as a prayer for Samantha Smith, the thirteen-year-old American girl who campaigned against nuclear war and died in a plane crash in 1985, and as a tribute to the "child heretic" who does battle with the follies of adults. Cast in two movements, it quotes two Gregorian chants. Commissioned by the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra of Minnesota, it is dedicated to Pinchas Zukerman. Kullberg has arranged this Viola Concerto No. 1 for cello and has also composed the cadenza. Saariaho's Notes on Light was commissioned by the Boston Symphony Orchestra and premiered in Boston and Helsinki with Anssi Karttunen as soloist. Its five movements are "Translucent, secret", "On Fire", "Awakening", "Eclipse" and "Heart of Light". The writing is designed to display the full technical range of the cello, and at the end of the score Saariaho quotes T. S. Eliot's poem The Waste Land. King International
