Description:
Choral works by Perttu Haapanen, the singularly inventive vocal composer active across the Nordic countries With his playfulness and his acute ear for every possibility of the human voice, Perttu Haapanen has established himself as one of the most exploratory and intellectually stimulating composers of vocal music in the Nordic countries. Born in Finland in 1972, he studied at the Sibelius Academy and at IRCAM in Paris, and his highly individual works combine a deep understanding of choral sonority with modernist technique, rigorous structure and a postmodern "deconstruction" of text. "For me, composing is not just assembling ready-made answers, but exploring with a Faustian passion and widening one's view of the world," says Haapanen. This new album from the Helsinki Chamber Choir and its artistic director Nils Schweckendiek - whose previous releases include "Kevat kerran on koittava (Spring will come)" (BIS-2442), a collection of Finnish choral music from the era of the Grand Duchy - presents seven works written by Haapanen in the twenty-first century. "Kullervo Clusters" uses a text freely assembled from the Kalevala, ancient Egypt, the modern Middle East and news flashes from a film-dominated Western culture. "Strophes", which takes as its raw sound material the Requiem that Jon Leifs wrote in memory of his beloved daughter, drowned in an accident, and "Strophes II", which develops that material further, are the most experimental pieces here. "Readymade Alice" is built on "definitions" of Lewis Carroll's Alice found in "cyberspace"; "Report" uses words taken from a medical report of unknown origin as material for "echoes"; "Taxidermic Peter" sets a text that "dissects" J. M. Barrie's Peter Pan; and "...sino phonia, paranonomasia." sets "Boujaafar Beach II" by the poet Markku Paasonen. The guitar part in "Report" is played by Petri Kumela, whose recordings include "Change Is Gonna Come" (Alba ABCD 313). King International
