His style is simple and clear, with elements of folk music. The Swedish composer Erland von Kock made his debut in the 1930s, the same decade as Larsson and Villeneuve. His works, which emphasize melody, simplicity, clarity, and elements of folk music, span a wide range of genres, including symphonies, orchestral works, concertos, music for films, including works by Ingmar Bergman, and instrumental music. One of his most clearly identifiable works, "Nordic Capriccio," was inspired by a folk song from the Dalarna region, and is widely popular for its timpani, ring-dance rhythms, and generous string melody reminiscent of "troll drums. Shock" is music that depicts the unsettled struggle for sovereignty between "good and evil" with obvious melodies and rhythms. The first of a trilogy for orchestra, the 1948 Symphony No. 3 is characterized by contrasting themes of defiant attitude, lyricism, and liberation, with shades of Bartók and Hindemith.The "solemn" Fourth reflects the composer's bittersweet mood as he tackles the "thankless task" of writing a symphony. Both works are first-time recordings. Conductor Per Hammarstrem began his career as a violinist and studied with Jorma Panula at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm before making his conducting debut in 2007.
