It illustrates how the trio sonata form, which originated in Italy in the 17th century, evolved approximately a century later. In addition to Vivaldi’s well-known “La Folia,” this album reveals that the original composition for Stravinsky’s “Pulcinella” or “Italian Suite” was not by Pergolesi but by Domenico Gallo; the “Sonata No. 1 in G Major” resounds with the very same melody as the “Pulcinella” overture, which is truly moving. In addition, works by Locatelli and Tartini—both great violinists of the era—as well as those by Porpora, known as the teacher of Haydn and Farinelli, allow us to truly appreciate how the tradition of the trio sonata evolved into the Rococo style.
