Finally Complete! The 20th and final volume in this collection of C.P.E. Bach’s keyboard concertos is a concerto for two pianos! An authentic interpretation by the masterful Spani. 2014 marks the 300th anniversary of C.P.E. Bach’s birth. The recording and release project, which began in 1995 in anticipation of this historic 300th anniversary, has finally come to a close. Volume 20 features a concerto for two keyboard instruments. The performance is by Miklós Spani, who has been the series’ soloist since its inception. When recording began, Spani remarked, “Realizing a complete collection is by no means a simple task, especially when it includes works by an early composer. In this series, we present all of C.P.E. Bach’s unquestionably authentic works for solo keyboard and accompanying ensemble. Since our goal is to provide a comprehensive overview of the interpretive possibilities for these works, this recording is based on a thorough study of the extant sources and authentic performance practices. We have selected and are performing on instruments that are ‘authentic’ according to the original sources.” The performance is thus based on a truly authentic interpretation. These works were performed with interpretations that only Spani—who has devoted considerable time and effort to steadily recording this vast body of work—could bring to life. In 2014, this comprehensive collection—one of the finest among the albums commemorating the 300th anniversary of C.P.E. Bach’s birth—was completed. Born in Budapest in 1962. He studied organ and harpsichord at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music under Ferenc Gergely and János Sebestyén. He also studied with Jos van Immaels at the Royal Flemish Conservatory and with Hedwig Birgram at the Munich University of Music. In addition to performing throughout Europe as a soloist on four keyboard instruments (organ, harpsichord, clavichord, and fortepiano), he also performs as a continuo player with various orchestras and Baroque ensembles. He won first prize at the International Harpsichord Competitions held in Nantes in 1984 and in Paris in 1987.
