Biondi’s Brilliance Shines: Handel’s Final Masterpiece, “Jephtha” Biondi, who made a striking debut with “The Four Seasons” while leading Europa Galante, now takes on Handel’s oratorio with the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra of Norway, where he has served as artistic director since 2005. “Jephtha,” composed in 1751, was Handel’s last major work before he lost his sight and is filled with a charm and beauty rivaling his early masterpieces. It depicts the story of Jephthah, the leader of Israel, who, despite returning triumphant from battle, is destined to lose his beloved daughter in order to keep a vow to God that he would sacrifice the first person he encountered upon his return. The role of Jephthah is superbly performed by British tenor Jill Christ, who has also appeared with the BCJ. Although the orchestra is modern, Biondi’s signature period interpretation and lively musical approach are incredibly refreshing. King International
