Our London Baroque trio sonata series—which has so far covered 17th-century France, Germany, and England—has finally reached its birthplace: Italy. The term “trio sonata” was coined later; in 17th-century Italy, “two-part sonatas” or “three-part sonatas” were the standard terms. London Baroque has carefully selected 16 pieces that serve as excellent examples of the genre’s evolution—from Cima’s “Three-Part Sonata” (1610), one of the earliest examples of this form, to Corelli’s masterpiece, “Sonata No. 12 from Op. 1.” While these pieces hold academic value, they are all filled with the beautiful melodies unique to Italy, allowing listeners to immerse themselves in a rich musical experience.
