This is interesting. Original recorder pieces by modern composers. Dan Laurin, known as the “Nordic mendicant monk,” has taken on a very intriguing genre. While the recorder is typically associated with early music or contemporary music, the renowned British virtuoso Carl Dolmetch (1911–97) commissioned new works from leading composers of the time for his concert at Wigmore Hall, resulting in a variety of unusual recorder pieces. The recorder pieces composed by York Bowen, Cyril Scott, and others—without altering their usual styles—range from rich, Rachmaninoff-esque romanticism to Debussy-esque impressionism, and even Prokofiev-esque dynamism, undergoing a transformation that seems almost unimaginable for such a simple instrument.
