1998 digital recording. The fourth installment in the series of solo harpsichord works. This collection focuses primarily on pieces classified as “fantasias.” It includes eight fantasias (and fugues), beginning with the particularly famous “Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue” (BWV 921, “Prelude on an Arpeggio,” is also known as a “fantasia”). Also included are two fugues based on themes by Albinoni (with Prelude BWV 923 appended to BWV 951) and two “Capriccios” (“On the Departure of My Beloved Brother” and “In Praise of Johann Christoph Bach”). With a delicate touch, this is a beautiful performance that brings out the distinct individuality of the “Fantasy’s” flowing motifs.
