Live Recording of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 1 This is the second release in DOREMI’s Horenstein series, following the DVD of Beethoven’s “Ninth” (DHR7960)—which captured the maestro’s rare conducting performance and has garnered a tremendous response. Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 1, which was previously released on CD by another label, is well known among fans as a distinctive performance by the maestro—who specialized in Mahler—but since it had been out of print and difficult to obtain for a long time, its return to the catalog is a welcome development. The two movements from “Violanta,” written by the precocious genius Korngold at the age of 17, were released on vinyl for a very brief period in the early 1980s and garnered a reputation at the time for their superb performance; this is likely their first-ever release on CD. As for Hindemith’s symphony *The Painter Matisse*, although Horenstein also recorded a stereo session with the LSO in 1972—a recording that was highly acclaimed—this live performance with the French National Radio Orchestra also holds great promise.
