Making her long-awaited debut is Serena Wang, a prodigy newly emerged from China’s rich piano scene! Born in October 2004, Serena Wang (real name Wang Yalun) became the youngest winner of the University of California, Berkeley’s Bach Piano Competition at the age of five and won a gold medal in the 5–6-year-old category at China’s National Children’s Piano Competition. Praised by the judges, she went on to further hone her skills under the guidance of Dan Jiao Yi, the renowned Chinese teacher who mentored Yundi Li and Sa Chen. Since then, she has continued to make a name for herself as a child prodigy, participating in the Beijing International Piano Festival and the Beijing International Music Festival, and performing alongside Lang Lang, the Sichuan Symphony Orchestra, and the China Philharmonic Orchestra. Her most recent award was the Gold Prize in the Concerto B category (for university students and younger) at the 2014 Chopin International Piano Competition in Asia. Recorded in August 2013 when Serena Wang was nine years old, this debut album is a collection of piano pieces for children by composers such as Chopin, Poulenc, and Shostakovich. It also features works by contemporary Chinese composers, including her piano teacher Dan Jiaoyi, as well as Tan Dun and He Lu-ting. Moreover, do not underestimate these works just because they are intended for children. The sure touch produced by her small hands is accompanied by a delicate and endearing expression.
