Amsterdam Sinfonietta Schubert’s String Quintet—Featuring a Double Bass! Rick Stottin shines! Schubert’s late masterpiece, the “String Quintet,” featuring a double bass in place of the cello! This new recording by the Amsterdam Sinfonietta, one of the Netherlands’ leading string orchestras, features Schubert’s String Quintet performed by a select ensemble of five musicians led by Music Director Candida Thompson. The Amsterdam Sinfonietta has gained popularity for its solo-oriented programs, including string orchestra arrangements of various string quartets, as well as the “Mahler Album” and the “Argentine Album.” This recording of the string quintet also features a version unique to the Amsterdam Sinfonietta: instead of the standard quintet lineup (two violins, one viola, and two cellos), a double bass is added in place of the cello. The arrangement is by Dutch arranger Marin van Prooijen, who has previously arranged works for the Amsterdam Sinfonietta, including Brahms (CCSSA30411) and Rick Stottin’s Piazzolla (CCSSA33613).
