British cellist Paul Merlin and Canadian virtuoso Stéphane Lemlin, an expert in French music, take on French cello works from the Belle Époque. Since we rarely have the opportunity to hear these pieces—with the exception of Fauré’s Sonata—this is most welcome. Although the female composer Rita Stroll was recognized by Saint-Saëns and Fauré, her assertive nature and refusal to mingle in Parisian high society led to her being completely forgotten, and her works remained unpublished and uncataloged. Interest in her art has been growing in recent years since her dramatic Grand Sonata *Titus and Berenice* was rediscovered. Her music features a unique, dramatic world that seems to reflect her fiery personality. Fernand de La Tonber, born into a baronial family, studied under Dubois at the Paris Conservatory and led a multifaceted life as a writer, photographer, and astronomer while also working as an organist. It is also noteworthy that he served as a professor of harmony at the Schola Cantorum, where Sévrach was one of his students. This is the world’s first recording of *Variations in the Chaconne Form*.
