Lute player Esteban La Lotta, originally from Colombia, studied medieval and Renaissance lute at the Schola Cantorum in Basel and is known for his hybrid playing style that combines a plectrum with his fingers. This album is an attempt to recreate the beginnings of the history of European solo lute music. It is believed that the master musician known at the time as the “Blind German” was the organist Konrad Paumann; however, since no sheet music survives, La Rotta has reconstructed the works based on Paumann’s organ pieces and the Wolfenbüttel tablature discovered in 2011. While the academic research behind it is extensive, the music is incredibly beautiful, inviting listeners into a pleasant, archaic world. Tokyo M Plus
