Description:
Kurtág's Quartet, a Webern-like serenity that sometimes creaks violently, Kurtág is a Romanian-born Hungarian composer who will turn 90 in 2016. Strongly influenced by the New Viennese School, including Schoenberg and Webern, and the Domaine Musicale led by Boulez, he published his string quartet as Op. 1 in 1959. Despite his limited output, he composed eight compositions for string quartet, all of which are included on this album in chronological order. The Molinari String Quartet, which plays on this album, is a professional quartet that has recorded many contemporary works by Schnittke, Schaeffer, Gubaidulina, and others. The quartet has been called "Canada's answer to Kronos Q and Arditti Q." You can expect an excellent performance that is a perfect introduction to Kurtág.Endre Selvánski (1911-1977), mentioned in the title of the piece, was a Hungarian composer, Jacob Obrecht (1457/8-1505) was a Flemish composer, and Walter Levin was the first violinist of the LaSalle String Quartet.
